Plenary Sessions

Session #1: “The Church and Family as Vehicles of Grace”
Speaker: N. Gray Sutanto

Description: This session will lay a strong biblical foundation for the role of both the church and the family as God’s primary vehicles of grace, formation, and discipleship. Dr. Sutanto will unpack key theological themes that emphasize the unique roles and calls given these two institutions. This session aims to create a compelling sense of responsibility in attendees to steward both family and church well in light of Scripture.

Session #2: “The Voices of Women in the Family and the Church”
Speaker: Vivian Mabuni

Description: Women—daughters, wives, and mothers—often carry the weight of family responsibilities but may find their voices muted or unheard within both the church and family structures. Vivian Mabuni will bring biblical wisdom and personal insight to elevate the conversation on the value, influence, and spiritual leadership of women within the home and the church. This session will encourage both men and women to reflect on the cultural and theological dynamics that have shaped the treatment of women in family and church settings. Participants will be encouraged to honor and empower the voices of women in their families, churches, and ministries.

Session #3: “Convicted to Repent as Husbands, Wives, Fathers, and Mothers”
Speaker: David Hsu

Description: Many participants enter family life with assumptions, cultural baggage, and unbiblical expectations that contribute to dysfunction, distance, and disappointment. David Hsu will deliver a deeply convicting message on the ways we fall short as husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers. Drawing from Scripture and real-life examples, this session will expose the inadequacies and sinful tendencies that hinder healthy family relationships. This session is designed to lead to a time of corporate and personal repentance where participants will be invited to reflect, confess, and seek God’s grace to be faithful stewards of their families. A guided time of prayer will follow, fostering spiritual renewal and surrender.

Session #4: “Healing from Family Brokenness”
Speaker: Aaron Chung

Description: Every person enters adulthood carrying some form of brokenness and wounds from their family of origin. These wounds—whether from absent fathers, controlling mothers, unhealthy expectations, or relational conflicts—shape the way we interact in marriage, parenting, and ministry. Aaron Chung will speak to the universal reality of family pain and how the gospel brings restoration to individuals, families, and generations.  This session will also explore how Asian cultural values intersect with biblical principles on family, encouraging a gospel-centered approach to restoration.

Session #5: “The Church as Family”
Speaker: Hanley Liu

Description: While biological families are important, the church is called to be a spiritual family where believers find belonging, support, and love, especially in light of the fact that the early church functioned as a family in the New Testament. Hanley Liu will unpack the biblical concept of the church as our second family, emphasizing how brothers and sisters in Christ can provide support, accountability, and encouragement when our biological families fall short.  Pastors and church leaders will be encouraged to cultivate a culture of “family” within their congregations, ensuring that no one in the body of Christ walks alone.

Session #6: “The Family as a Launchpad, Not an Idol”
Speaker: Michael Oh

Description: While family is a God-ordained institution, it is not meant to be our ultimate identity or purpose. Many people, particularly in Asian American communities, idolize the family unit, prioritizing familial obligations above the call to follow Christ. Michael Oh will challenge participants to see family not as an end in itself, but as a means through which we are shaped and sent to fulfill God’s calling.
